Foxton Locks

The sun was shining this weekend, so we decided to go on an adventure to Foxton Locks, an operating canal crossing that takes canal boats uphill.

Canal boat parking.

One of the ten locks. Look how narrow the canal is!

The ten locks and the hill. They open the gates one by one to float the boats up to the top.

People stash all sorts of things on top of their canal boats from bikes to potted plants. Those fuzzy little white and brown blurs on the top of this boat are dogs (I think Pete was jealous)!

From the top of the hill you can see the local farmland stretching out in the distance. Bright yellow fields of rapeseed are shockingly beautiful at this time of year. On overcast days the blossoms seem to make the ground glow. This picture hardly does them justice.

Union jack blowing in the wind. They hardly fly flags here compared to the US, so it's very fun to come across one.

Before highways, the canals were the major freight-ways for the midlands. This is an old canal barge.

Here's a canal boat making its way through the locks. It was a surprisingly fast process. It only took a few minutes to clear each lock.

Pete got shorn like a little sheep the other day. It's his pre-baby/summer look.

18 Miles to Leicester.

Pete and me at the canal. The canal boats are really like little floating holiday houses. Renting one of these babies is definitely on the bucket list, even if it's just for a day trip. Anyone game to join us?

Of course, after any good adventure, it's essential to log some nap time. Pete knows how it's done. He's all about the bean bags!
